Block Print
Title: Mi Azteca
|
Artist InspirationMy inspiration for this piece was the German expression era. As soon as I saw the ink and the way thing could be cut out I thought about the German expression on how similar they were. The German expression was a moment of artist not quit a single individual artist but many. I ad learned about it my sophomore year in art history class when I got introduced to a variety of artist and their movement. The German had a lot of feelings and emotions going into a single black and white piece. It had many critics. So that's what I wanted my piece to give out. I wanted to give the significance in my piece out in a single image.
PlanningFor my planing in block print I wanted to it in my culture. I had so many oppositions to choose from. I wanted to focus on history of where I was from and my grandparents where from. So I decide to go in deep and look at the Mayans.
Later I looked up images of the Aztec calendar. InspistaionThe reason why I wanted to use the Aztec calendar was to connect my roots with art. And portrait them with ink was as almost like a real calendar that you could have with you at any time. Each of each of the figure carved into thee wall have a meaning. In the ancient times
ProcessMy first step in this process was to select the piece. My first thought was the Mayan calendar. I had done a project similar to this back in my Sophomore year. Later then I started to free draw it. It didn't turn out the way I wanted it so, now what i did was I printed the Mayan calendar and then copy it. Trying to make the shapes easy to copy so when using the tools to carve it out I would be precise.
Once I was done carving the image I moved to the ink. That’s where I had the most difficulty because you could either fail or succeed. I had to do a couple trials in other to get the result I wanted. To rick the image itself was that you had to distribute the whole ink into the block and a little runs lot Later use the aer given to copy into it. And to give it that smooth look you had to use the tool that was made from a special material in Japan. Success and Failres
I would say this piece would be the one who was confusing in the way how I wanted my final result to look like. First of all carving the block was a new thing to use. The knives use to it came in different sizes and so you had the option to choose depending what is that you wanted to do with your image. Later with my first block I wasn't happy with the image and also if you went in too deep you would cut through the block. |
Refelction
My accomplishments with this piece was something interesting to do. It was my first time working with ink. My personal experience working with ink was that a little goes a lot. Besides the ink working with the board it was difficult. carving out the image that I wanted a struggle. I actually had to use another one because of the time I would trespass the other side. Also with the other one my fit designs was free hand, It wasn't a good idea because I was just eyeballing it. rather than when i started over i first drew it and sketch it out. I once half a better understanding on where everything went.
